Welcome to our social media category!

One of Safkhet’s goals is to create an audience for her authors and since so many people are on social media sites, we’re intent on helping our authors connect with their readers. Wherever you are in your social media journey: jump on the social media bandwagon when you like, add your own comments, and come on a virtual world tour with us.

This week’s tasks:

Have a look at Social Media for Authors: How to Get Great Results with Minimal Time Commitment

Choose which sites you wish to use to help you manage your social media sites (if any!)

This week’s tasks are for authors who may find it difficult to juggle and maintain multiple social media sites in and around a busy schedule. The article above suggests sites, such as Hootsuite, Tweetdeck and Google Analytics.

Hootsuite allows you to publish posts to your blog, Twitter, Facebook etc. on specific dates and times. This is great if, for example, your book is released on Friday, but you’ll be far too busy to tell your followers and friends online, so allowing Hootsuite to publish for you on that day will save you time and worry (and it also helps with marketing your book too!)

Tweetdeck can help authors manage and monitor their Twitter pages. Have you ever been on Twitter and find that it’s difficult to keep up with the infinite stream of tweets? Well, Tweetdeck helps you break the site down enabling you to see who is doing what through columns: Timeline, Interactions, Messages and Activity. See Twitter’s Help Centre page for more information.

Google Analytics is a service by Google that helps people monitor traffic to a site. Once set up, it will allow you to see how many people are visiting your social media sites every day and it will help you monitor your site accordingly. You will be able to then decide what does and doesn’t work on your sites in terms of the content you post.

I hope this helps!

This week’s task:

Check your social media sites are up-to-date:

Haven’t blogged in a while? Use this week to focus on writing two blog entries (don’t forget to link them to your Facebook and Twitter!)

Pending book reviews? Post the reviews for the books you have finished reading but haven’t got around to posting on Goodreads/LibraryThing yet

Haven’t posted on Facebook/Twitter in the past week? Make sure you use this week to post/tweet a few posts and connect with your followers

Keeping multiple social media sites up-to-date can be tricky to fit in around your weekly schedule. It’s important that you do, though. Long periods of no posts/tweets can be dangerous. People will soon lose interest or forget about you (unless they’re an avid fan!) if you don’t connect on a regular basis, so finding that time each day or week is vital for you as an author and your work.

It is World Book Day today and I’d like to take the opportunity to motivate you all to buy a book. Buy it and read it once you’ve taken it home! Show those creatures some love!

If you like, you could buy one of ours; most of them are still on sale at Amazon!

I am going to take the moment and introduce our newest specimen that are available now:

Pope Innocent XIV drops dead three days into the job. But the afterlife, much like his reign, proves a bit of a disappointment. First, his guide, winged hat aside, is practically naked and thinks everything’s a bit of a joke. The Lord God calls him goy and tells him to bugger off; and come the day of Judgement his judges turn out to be human, and not even remotely saintly.

Then there’s the culture shock. The only three-in-one deity around is a she, and she’s terrifying. Not to mention all those divine birthday parties – none of which is for Jesus, despite it being December, because, apparently, He was born in August. But the worst part of all is that, despite his best efforts to explain, no one seems to want to understand that there’s nothing quite so evil in the world, as condoms.

Revenge of the Golf Widow is a highly visual cartoon book dedicated to golf lovers. It depicts the many different situations a golfer finds himself in, in his quest to play his beloved game of golf, while his partner has other ideas. The book has cleverly portrayed these situations with explanations by Royal & Ancient rulings … with a slight twist! The result is an uncanny resemblance to our reality, when life is going crazy and all we can do is laugh.

These two characters in this book are our avid golfer and his beloved partner who does everything in her power to prevent him going out to enjoy his favourite pastime, GOLF!

The publishers cannot be held responsible for any damage to golf clubs, household items or relationship break ups. The publishers apologise in advance to all private and municipal golf courses for any membership losses incurred due to this publication.

Dai the Drinking Dragon has been kidnapped by the Dark Lord for nefarious purposes, and by his receptionist for even less reputable reasons. Without their bass player, The Banned Underground are now in deep trouble with their record label. They have to produce the recordings for an album, and someone has stolen the tapes from the last gig. Can they make some more recordings, or will Freya, the renegade dwarf bass player, distract the boys whilst the Dark Lord’s evil schemes come to fruition?

The Dark Lord has found some thugs to help him in his latest plan to invade the Dwarf Mansion, but they have other things on their minds – like looting and pillaging the locals, and it’s all going wrong again.

Will record-producing Adam set his Ants on The Banned? Or will it all come good in the end? Time is Tight on this one for The Banned Underground…

and very soon:

How Not to Murder Your Grumpy

Is your Grumpy Old Man getting under your feet? Is he wrestling with retirement? Are you wondering if you should bundle him up and entrust him to basket-weaving classes? Then this book could be the answer to your prayers. This light hearted guide is packed full of lively ideas, anecdotes and quips. Not only does it set out to provide laughs, but offers over 700 ideas and ways to keep a Grumpy Old Man occupied.

From collecting airline sick bags to zorbing, you will be sure to find an absorbing pastime for your beloved curmudgeon. There are examples of those who have faced extraordinary challenges in older age, fascinating facts to interest a reluctant partner and innovative ideas drizzled, of course, with a large dollop of humour.

Written tongue-in-cheek, this book succeeds in proving that getting older doesn’t mean the end of life or having fun. It provides amusing answers to the question, “How on Earth will my husband fill in his time in his retirement?” It offers suggestions on what might, or most certainly might not, amuse him. Ideal for trivia buffs, those approaching retirement, (or just at a loose end) and frustrated women who have an irritable male on their hands, this book will lighten any mood and may even prevent the odd murder.

Research writer’s conferences which will be taking place throughout the year

Have a look on the Writers & Artists website (the ‘Advice’ section looks particularly useful)

check Twitter for what was going on at the London Book Fair #LBF13

Knowing what’s going on in the market around you is important. There are numerous conferences and industry-related events taking place throughout the year which will keep you up to date with the ins and outs of the book trade. Even if you cannot attend the event, you can take part in it through Twitter.

Have a great week!

This week’s task:

Tweet or post a short snippet/quote from the book you are currently writing (or have recently finished) on Twitter, Facebook and your blog etc.

Giving your followers or friends a sneak peek at the book you’re currently working on, or even a book that’s due for release later in the year will create hype and build interest in your work. You’ve already been focusing on building your following and telling them about you, so now it’s time to give them a feel for your work.

Be careful, though! While giving people a taster of your work is a great marketing tool, be careful not to overdo it! (by overdoing it I mean writing a snippet every day for example) Giving too much away could have the adverse effect and people will be put off if you’re constantly talking about your book every time you tweet. So, keep your snippet/quote short and sweet. Perhaps you could tweet your favorite line from your book, or use a quote which will create mystery as your followers will want to know what it’s about!

This week’s task:

Set up fictional Twitter pages for the characters in your latest book

Setting up fictional social media pages in order to bring your characters to life not only helps to market your book, but it also brings a whole new perspective to the character and the story. JP Jones, the author of Market Yourself: A Beginner’s Guide to Social Media, has said that ‘having a Twitter conversation between the author and character can be very enlightening to the mind of the writer’. Whether your book is to be released later in the year, or it’s already out, it’s a great way to advertise your work and generate some hype among your fans. It’s also a bit of fun!

Until next time, have a great week!

This week’s task:

Interact with 5 people you ‘Follow’ on Facebook and Twitter

Whilst it’s good to ‘Add Friends’ on Facebook and ‘Follow’ tweeps on Twitter, it’s even better to keep in contact with them on a regular basis. It also ensures that they know who you are and what you’re currently working on. Building good rapport with people you’re connected to means they can help spread the word on your latest novel.

Last week, I asked you to follow tweeps which were genre-specific to your own writing style, this week it’s all about making yourself known: comment on a book they’ve just published, ask them tips on how they get over writer’s block, find out where they get their inspiration etc.

Another idea: Maybe you could start a ‘Trend’ on Twitter – #WaysToGetOverWriter’sBlock, for example.

Until next week…
